summer camp 1 Kathy
1 ) Kathy
when Skaterina was Kathy she went to a YWCA summer camp
on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland for two years
her second year was the BEST year
she was 13 and her BEST friend went to camp with her
they were assigned the BEST cabin
the one with little rooms, a screened porch surrounding
the whole cabin
in the trees away from the main cabin compound
they had the BEST counselor
Tink : red haired college girl
Tink's BEST friend was there too
Cassie : she was Kathy's first schoolgirl crush on a woman
Tink and Cassie : they were the BEST college girls and so much fun
Kathy's BEST friend was Christa, a German girl
her mother was Jewish and the family got out of Germany just in time
when Junior Hostess' were chosen to sit at the head of the table
Christa was not chosen / her feelings were hurt / she wept
Kathy thought she knew what the matter was
she went to see the Camp Director
it is C's table manners
she ate with her fork in her left hand and her knife in the right
Kathy told the Director that this was Good Manners in Germany
and in most of Europe
they dont shift the knife and fork back and forth like we do here in the
USA
which is clumsy and often causes dropping the silverware into the gravy
so Christa became a Junior Hostess too

Kathy passed her long distance swimming test so she cd take a row boat
out without a grown up along
she trounced one of the boys (a cute one!) at ping pong when the boys'
camp came to visit
maybe not trounced exacly / it was almost a tie / smile
they were very sporting
they were being raised to be Ladies and Gentlemen
Kathy was glad to be away from home for awhile
although mama was jealous bc she never went to camp
and great aunt maudie tried to guilt trip her about leaving
them all alone at home / boo hoo
great aunt Maudie snuck cookies and other goodies into her clean laundry !
wait ! there's more
Kathy designed a sampan for the row boat competition
bc she wanted to weave the reeds that grew along the bay
to use for the shady roof of the sampan
and bc she was a bit of a show off
she had learned to weave when she was a little kid
it came out nifty
collapsed as they passed the judges
but it was the most different and they got an award anyway
sooooo
when Kathy got home she discovered that mama and great aunt Maudie
had new slipcovers made for their upholstered furniture
NONE of the slipcovers matched each other !
the studio couch was pale yellow background with Hawaiian motif
big gray and green leaves and other tropical looking vegetation
Kathy loved it
the wing chair was gray with the seams detailed with fringy yellow
it was nice and the fabric had an interesting texture
the third chair well she cant quite recall
it was a small print with colors that didnt match but definitely went together*
Kathy was astounded, flabber gasted
I didnt know you cd do that ! she said to herself
her whole view of life shifted from going away to summer camp
and coming home again
