expanding our culinary horizons

kale, chard, and broccoli, to name only three, are mainstays of an anti.cancer diet

by now, close to two years since her cancer was discovered, Skaterina is now morbidly stanca di tutti

tired of all !

so ~~~~~~~

she cannot eat one more leaf of kale or chard

she cant stand one more broccoli floret

she only likes the stems which she dices and cooks by themselves or with little cubes of tenderloin grass fed beef

therefore :

we are eating weeds

malva neglecta grows like a weed / hardy and perennial

it is related to hibiscus and geraniums

it is nutritious in the same way that "conventional" greens are / that is, lots of minerals

bind weed is nutritious plant that grows like a weed !  heh

it is the wild version of morning glories / smaller leaves with little white flowers

of course, here in the desert, we have the baby green tender sprouts of what will become tumble weeds / picked early in the spring they are much like an Italian vegetable called aggretti that we came to know and love while living in Italy

those Italians, they know what to pick and harvest of the wild things

while researching anti.cancer we discovered that everything that grows on our beautiful planet is good for something / i mean, really  good !

even nut grass and goat head seeds !

tips from the land of Ayurveda:

Nut grass is called Musta in India. It is used as an Emmenagogue for "Pita type" female complaints

It cools, soothes and regulates Pita (overly heated) menstruation. Use the whole plant including the nut.

Goatheads: Are called Gokshura.

The mature seeds are ground into a powder. It is the superlative nutritive tonic for strengthening the kidneys and restoring libido. Considered a powerful aphrodisiac for both men and women.

currently, for it is the season, the family daughter is harvesting prickly pears

these are the fruits on the prickly pear cactus that blooms in the spring

in the southwestern desert we have beaucoup prickly pears

we gather hundreds !  thousands !!

the fruits are steamed, blended, strained, and make a delicious sauce

a stunningly beautiful color and no need for any sweetening

we will have frozen cubes of prickly pear sauce all this winter

but right now she is scooping up a dish of ice cream

so there
