hoddies
hoddies are hot water bottles
from the time Skaterina read Summerhill by A.S, Neill
she wanted her kid to go to the most progressive school in the world !
but oh so far away
first fight with Actor Man ensues
he expected his child to go to the same school his debutante sister went to
National Cathedral for Girls in Washington, D.C
he went to Episcopal Prep in nearby Virginia
nothing doing sez Skaterina
although the child was still in nursery school and it was one affiliated with
the Episcopal Church
lucky for them by the time their Darling Daughter was12 or thereabouts
they had moved to Rome
DD was enrolled in the OverSeas School of Rome
a school modeled on American schools !
Skaterina herself had received what she considered to be an excellent public
school education in the state of Maryland
well, the Overseas School was a bust
not only bigoted and close minded they had strict dress codes
and the whole shebang
Skaterina was immediately in battle mode
when school officials told her DD had scored Moron ! on the I Q test
(Skaterina's score from school days was a point or two below genius
which she was ready to claim as true)
but not if the same kind of tests showed her kid was a moron
she took her out of the school
"You'll ruin her life," they said
you are already ruining it was her reply
thus was organized a custom education
home schooling a la Roma ex.pat style
a medical student came to tutor her in science
they dissected a heart
a history and literature major took her round the history of Rome
in Madrid she learned Castilian spanish and how martial law works
for the city was under martial law at the time
University students were forbidden to gather on the streets
some of them gathered in Skaterina's apartment
they taught DD a new language and how to make and fly paper airplanes
out the windows of their high apartment
next there was Davos for skiing
more at Kitzbeuhl
in between there was lunch in Lichenstein
back to home Skaterina wrote a letter to A.S. Neill describing her plight
one night the telephone rang in the Rome
Skaterina answered to hear the voice of A.S.Neill
you know sometimes you're asked what famous person you would most
like to meet ?
A.S.Neill was Skaterina's
she was thrilled
well, he says, your daughter is older than we like to take them but come on up
and we will talk it over
bliss zone
up we went to London, then the train to Leiston up near the North Sea
where we spent an informative and entertaining week at the school
DD hanging with the kids and Skaterina wil the Man himself
he flirted with her !
he said if he were fifty years younger..........
he interviewed DD
What is your favorite car ?
was one of the questions
we were there long enough for the weekly free wheeling meeting that all the
students run
we loved it
now about those hoddies
they stayed in an inn called White Horse
the first night going in to the communal bathroom
(communal does not mean all lodgers in there at the same time)
there were dozens of hot water bottles hanging along one wall
enough for everybody !
thus began a long standing hoddie habit for Skaterina and the DD
oh she went to school there until she was 17
while Skaterina returned to Rome with the Actor man started up
an English speaking theatre and an Improv Workshop
a good time was had by all
