serial Interupters
a serial interrupter is / surprise / someone who continually interrupts the speaker to interject his or her comment
the serial interrupter considers his or her comment so urgent it just cannot wait until the speaker is finished
recognize anybody ?
Me do / Me do too
we all do / it is the American way
we learned this from sit coms
funny or disparaging one liners
get 'em in fast
serial interrupting is the cornerstone of not listening
if your mouth is moving you are not listening
it is preferable to allow someone to finish what they are saying / they might want to get out a whole paragraph instead of a one.liner / they may even have more than one paragraph if they are telling something they think is important or just plain ol' needs to say it all at once
the Navajo consider that when one is speaking the other one is actually listening / the listener does not need to continually nod and mumble uh huh to indicate he or she is listening
the listener remains silent
silence is how one listens
gosh, what a concept
when the listener is aware the speaker is finished there is a pause just to be sure and then the listener comments or not as the case may be
when the grandkid came to town to buy a house and find his place in the family he brought with him a truckload of grievances, most of them justified
he had been dumped by his mother, rescued by his granny who turned out to be a practicing alcoholic
he had a lot to say and he wanted to be heard
You dont listen, he said
well, really, i do too yes i do, i do so !
No, you dont
it turned out we were all serial interrupters / no sooner had he got out a sentence or sometimes only half a sentence the responses would begin
finally we understood
now we dont interrupt nearly as much as we used to
~~~~~~~
no doubt a reader part way through the post will suggest the first letter of each line should be a CAP
gee, thanks
